News About Adoption

Adoption Cancellation Insurance

If you are considering independent adoption, but you are concerned about finances in the event a planned adoption does not succeed, think about Adoption Cancellation Insurance. I recommend it to my clients when the difference between trying again and not trying again is money.

As of January 31, 2000, I am sorry to say this insurance is not available. I hope it is a temporary situation, and will keep you up to date if I learn more. The carrier, Kemper Insurance, decided to cancel the coverage, and a new carrier has not been found.
Update - January 2001!!!!
I am advised that a new insurer has agreed to offer this coverage! It should happen soon, when they have had a chance to work out some of the kinks. I'll keep you posted, but contact the folks at MBO Insurance Brokers, Menlo Park, CA, for an update. As before, it will be available only to those working with approved agencies or attorneys. We don't yet have details about the cost or the coverage offered, but are pleased that some progress has been made.

The policy will be offered through MBO Insurance Brokers, Menlo Park, California.

Adoption Air Fares

Many things about adoption can be unpredictable, and one of them is when your baby will make its appearance. Many adoptive parents have had to make last-minute travel arrangements, often with little or no notice, and as you probably know, the air fares under those circumstances can be considerable. Now, however, someone can help you with this aspect. An Adoption Air Fare program has been put together by Federal Travel, a Florida agency. They have arranged with some of the major US carriers for adoption air fares, even at the very last minute, of approximately 50% off the buy-it-yourself-with-no-notice last minute fares. You need almost no advance warning, as in these days of electronic ticketing, no time is wasted mailing or overnighting tickets to you. They also tell me that even on plan-ahead trips, such as to meet a birth family, etc., they can save you perhaps 10-20%. Call them and check out the fares for your expected trip (which will come at an unexpected time!). You need only mention that you are adopting, and who referred you to Federal Travel.
